Bellefonte Red Raiders Baseball Historical Highlights

1925 -- After the 1925 season, Bellefonte dropped baseball as an interscholastic sport.

1930's -- Nine small Centre County high schools had baseball for many years, while the larger schools (Bellefonte, State College, Philipsburg) did not.

May 19, 1937 -- Bellefonte American Legion Post 33 and the Bellefonte entry in the Centre County League announce their sponsorship of a baseball game to be played on the new Bellefonte Community Baseball Field on August 23 between Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics of the American League against an All-Star team from the Centre County League.  The purpose is to dedicate the new field (the field our varsity now plays on).  Admission will be $1.00 per person.

August 23, 1937 -- 3000 people attend the field dedication and exhibition game won by the Athletics 10 to 7.  Connie Mack did not attend the game and the Athletics were managed that day by his son Earl Mack.  The Athletics team, which finished 7th in the American League in 1937, included players Wally Moses, Skeeter Newsom, Bill Werber and Indian Bob Johnson.  Centre County players in that game included Lefty Whitehill, Gib Anderson, Glenn Aumiller and Joe Confer.

1941 -- Bellefonte High School restored baseball to its sports lineup.  Glenn Aumiller, who had previously coached East Penns Valley High School in Millheim, was named coach.

April 15, 1941 -- In the first game in 15 years, Bellefonte was defeated 17 to 2  by the Reedsville High School Brownies.

April 28, 1941 -- Bellefonte 3, Centre Hall Tigers 1.  Bellefonte's Woody Johnson was 2 for 4 including a double.  Johnny Drogan had an RBI single.  Pitcher Lloyd Reese allowed 5 hits and struck out 6.  Other Bellefonte players included Johnny Rose, Jim Masullo (present day coach Pat Masullo's father), Dick Torsell and Frank Sciabica.

May 7, 1941 -- The first ever game between Bellefonte and State College High Schools was played on this date in State College.  Unfortunately, State College won 6 to 5.  Jim Masullo had two doubles.  The winning pitcher was Gene Barto and the losing pitcher was Lloyd Reese.

1942 -- Coach Aumiller was replaced by Forest Benford, who had previously coached Pleasant Gap High School prior to that school being absorbed into Bellefonte High School.

April 30, 1946 -- Bellefonte 10, Philipsburg 5 at Philipsburg.  Jim Sellers had 4 hits, including two home runs, and Joe DeHass had 2 hits.  The winning pitcher was Sellers.  Philipsburg's losing pitcher was Jim Polka.

May 8, 1956 -- Bellefonte 1, State College 0.  Jack Teaman had two hits and Emery White doubled for Bellefonte.  The winning pitcher, Bill Sharp, allowed only one hit and struck out 14.  Gary Williams, the losing pitcher, allowed 7 hits and struck out 3 for State College.

May 17, 1956 -- Miles Township 1, Walker Township 0.  This Centre County High School championship game was the last game ever played by both schools.  Miles Township was one of four schools that merged in September 1956 to form Penns Valley High School (the others were the Gregg Township Vocational High School, Centre Hall-Potter High School and East Penns Valley High School).  Walker Township, whose athletic teams were called the Cardinals, merged into Bellefonte Area High School that fall.

April 26,1963 -- Bellefonte 4, State College 2.  The winning pitcher was Denny Leathers who allowed 2 hits and struck out 11.  The losing pitcher was Shorty Stoner, who allowed 10 hits and struck out 5.  Bellefonte's Dave Long, Larry Conaway and Charlie Doland each had two hits. Other Bellefonte players included John Sodergren, Gary Kellogg, Rod Mitchell, Ron Howard and Denny McMullin.  1963 was Forest Benford's last season as Bellefonte's head coach.

1964 -- Don Robinson replaced Forest Benford as head coach of the Bellefonte High School baseball team.

May 15, 1964 -- Bellefonte 7, Philipsburg 6.  Bellefonte's victory gave Don Robinson a Central Penn League championship in his first year as Red Raider coach.  Barry Burger was the winning pitcher and Bill Rech took the loss.  For Bellefonte, Grant Lee had two hits, Glenn Hinds had a double, and Denny Lose hit a home run.  Other Bellefonte players included Larry Conaway, Charlie Doland, Ron Howard and Tom Bathgate.

June 7, 1968 -- Bellefonte 2, Curwensville 1.  With this victory, Bellefonte won the District 6 championship.  Bellefonte was also the Central Penn League champion that season.  The winning pitcher, Tom Purnell, struck out 13.  The losing pitcher was Ron Stewart.  Denny Dewitt had two hits including a double.  He scored the winning run on a passed ball.  Other Bellefonte players included Herb Beezer, Dan Leitzell, Sam "Fussy" Nastase, Bruce Baney, Bob O'Leary, Mel Harter and Bill Bierly.

June 11, 1973 -- Bellefonte 3, Philipsburg 0 at Beaver Field, Penn State University.  This victory gave Bellefonte the District 6 championship.  They previously had won the Central Penn League title.  Tom Burger, the winning pitcher, allowed only two hits.  Chuck Abbott took the loss for Philipsburg.  For Bellefonte, Larry Saylor and Burger each had two hits and Todd Cable doubled.  Bellefonte's runs were all scored in the top of the seventh inning.  Other Bellefonte players included Dave Gehret, Tom Eckley, Al Crafts, Steve Crowley and Ray McClure.  Tom Burger finished his high school career with a sparkling 17 and 0 record.

May 30, 1977 -- Bellefonte 3, State College 0.  The winning pitcher, Tom Dann, allowed 2 hits and struck out 10.  Terry Curley took the loss.  Wes Settle had two runs batted in and Jeff Regel doubled for the Raiders.  Other Bellefonte players included Greg Brown, Dave Houser, Ralph Bowersox, Pat Masullo, Randy McMullen, Todd McCartney and Matt Bush.  This victory gave Bellefonte the District 6 championship.  They also won the Central Penn League title that season.

1982 -- Denny Leathers replaced Don Robinson as head coach of the Bellefonte High School baseball team.  So, from 1942 through the current year, a period of 66 seasons, Bellefonte has had only three varsity baseball head coaches.

May 6, 1986 -- Bellefonte 10, Bald Eagle Area 0.  Bellefonte's winning pitcher was Dave Klinefelter who allowed three hits and struck out 10.  Doug Womer took the loss for Bald Eagle.  Cory Dimmick hit two home runs and Steve Purnell homered once for Bellefonte.  Other Bellefonte players that season included Eric Bjalme, Joe Kresovich, Andy Jabco and Kevin McCool.  Bellefonte won the 1986 Central Penn League Championship.

May 13, 1992 -- Bellefonte 5, Laurel Valley 0.  Bellefonte's winning pitcher in this first round District 6 playoff game was Eric Milton, who allowed only one hit, walked none, and struck out ten.  The losing pitcher was Chuck Burd.  Brian Egli was three for four and Seth Holderman had two hits.  Other Bellefonte players that season included Jeff Kellog, Travis Hendershot, Eric Ebeling and Ryan Leathers.  Bellefonte won the Central Penn League championship in 1992.

May 15, 1996 -- Bellefonte 11, Bald Eagle 0.  Bellefonte's winning pitcher, Brad Tomco, allowed only three hits.  The losing pitcher was Steve Bucha.  Scott Showers had three hits and Brian Robbins had two hits for Bellefonte.  Other Bellefonte team members in 1996 included Chris Shivery, Matt McCloskey, Rob Kormanic, Steve Shuey and R. J. Lee.
