Notes From the 2009 Season
Junior Ethan Kline stole 17 bases during the '09 season--the most since Seth Holderman's 30 back in 1992.
Sophomore Eric Regel joined the .400 Batting Average Club in '09 by batting .423. Senior Bryant James (.397) and Junior Ethan Kline (.397) just missed. Seth Tressler batted .424 to make it two consecutive years he hit over the .400 mark.
It was a year of streaks for the Red Raiders in '09 as they rattled off an eight game winning streak from April 8th through the 27th. Oddly, the Red & White then went on a lose a game/win a game streak that ended after securing back to back victories in District play over Lewistown and Indian Valley.
The Raiders had many terrific defensive plays during the season, but the play that stood out was a diving catch on the right field foul line by Matt Watson that helped secure an 11 to 2 first round playoff game against Lewistown. Numerous double plays turned in by the infielders also were a thing of beauty, as well as the consistent defensive play of Ian Musser in right field.
Cole McClarren (AKA "The Headhunter") may have broken a record past statistics do not clearly show. Cole hit 13 opposing hitters in '09. He beaned three straight Central Mountain hitters in an April 27th victory over Central Mountain.
The Raiders 19 victories were the most by a Red Raider team since the 1987 squad that had 23.
Matt Fisher concluded his outstanding career with a .523 batting average in his senior season, placing him second during the modern era behind Nate Stone's .586 season average in 2001. Stone and Brett Brown in 1998 & 99 both batted .500 twice during their Raider years.
Seniors Seth Tressler (SS), Matt Fisher (3B), Cole McClarren (P), along with Junior Ethan Kline (OF) and Sophomore Eric Regel (DH) were selected as MAC All Stars for the '09 season.
The '09 pitching staff of Robert Gummo, Cole McClarren, Jordan Brennan, and Seth Tressler recorded a combined ERA of 3.31 (one of the best in recent memory).
The Red Raiders .366 team batting average in '09 ranks second all-time, and was only surpassed by the '05's glittering mark of .370.
Matt Watson had only two errors during the season playing both second and short, which are positions infielders usually accumulate a double digit number of miscues.
Seniors Bryant James and Seth Tressler both collected a team leading 31 RBI's in '09 followed by Matt Fisher's 30 and Jordan Schainholz's 27.
Sophomore Robert Gummo collected his eleventh victory in his young pitching career when he tossed a complete game victory over Moon to send the Raiders to the State semifinals. Robert fanned 67 hitters in his 60 innings of work on the bump in '09. He also, strangely enough, recorded the exact same ERA he did in '08 at 2.70.
Red Raider seniors Ian Musser, Cole McClarren, Seth Tressler (four year starter), Bryant James, Frank Parkes and Matt Fisher will be deeply missed next year. Although the Raiders will be a junior ladden squad, for the most part, the group will include three seniors that lettered in Schainholz, Brennan and Kline as well as Levi Knoffsinger. Four Raider juniors-to-be also won letters in '09 and have helped serve notice the Raiders will be back with a vengeance in 2010. Several talented JVs are also waiting in the wings to make their contributions to the 2010 team.
The Raiders 19-7 record in '09 marks the 20th straight winning season for the squad.
Senior Cole McClarren won the James Snyder Award and the Jerry Luckovich Memorial Baseball Award given to the baseball player that best exhibits the qualities of trustworthiness, integrity and a strong work ethic.
The '09 Red & White were 0-3 on Thursdays, while going a terrific 6-0 on Fridays. An attempt will be made to schedule as many games in 2010 on Fridays as possible.
The '09 addition of the Red Raiders were 0-3 in one run games.
A turning point for the Raiders was a mid-season rout over the highly regarded AAAA and undefeated Central Mountain squad. Strangely enough, two days later, the Raiders were upended by a young and, at the time, struggling Penns Valley nine. The point learned by the Raiders was that unless you remain completely focused, regardless of the other team's record, you can and will get knocked off. The Raiders finished with a flourish--LESSON LEARNED.
Seth Tressler concluded a remarkable career at Bellefonte with his 107 career hits, second only to Cody Young's 119 in 2006. The only other career 100 hit player was Nate Stone who went on to become an All American at Army. Seth solidified an already good pitching group by garnering several victories in the Raiders run to the State semifinals in '09.
The Raiders run to the gold metal was squashed by Chartiers Valley in the semifinals by a score of 3-1. This was only the 2nd time in school history the squad had advanced to that level. Their play will set the standard for future Red Raider teams.
Matt Fisher, among his many accomplishments during his career, recorded his second consecutive slugging percentage over 1.000 with a mind boggling 1.127 in '09.
